Balboa Park is easily one of the most iconic places for engagement photos in San Diego, and every session here feels a little different depending on the couple, the time of day, and the energy they bring. For Alli and Harrison, their session was warm, soft, playful, and full of the sweetest nerves you’d never even notice in the final photos.
We met on a weekday during Thanksgiving week at 10AM, which is one of those rare times Balboa Park feels calm and open. Even with morning light, the park has so many shaded architectural pockets that we were able to create that soft, candid, documentary feel they wanted.
It was their first time ever taking professional photos, and there was something so genuine about watching them settle into the experience. I photographed them for Ro Banner Photography, while Samara from my team in Bridal Content Besties captured all the candid behind-the-scenes content — the laughs between prompts, the movement moments, the realness that reels and TikToks love.

Balboa Park offers many beautiful places for engagement photos. You can get elegant architecture, quiet walkways, and soft natural light all in one session. Below are the locations we used and why they work well.
The Organ Pavilion is one of the best spots for portraits. The bright walls and wide space make the light soft and even. It is also a great starting point because couples can warm up without feeling crowded.
We took their first walking photos here. These simple prompts helped them relax and get used to the camera.

Alli and Harrison started their session here — still a little shy, still giggly — but this open space gave them room to warm up without feeling watched or crowded. Their first walking shots and gentle prompts happened right here.
Some of the best photos happen in the small walkways and corners around the park. These spots are shaded and peaceful, which makes the photos feel natural and candid.
We explored a few different paths and captured walking shots and in-between moments. These ended up being some of their favorites.

Alli and Harrison wanted their photos to feel natural and true to them. They preferred simple prompts and gentle movement. Because they met naturally—not through an app—their connection feels quiet and easy. That energy translated beautifully in their photos.

If you plan to take your engagement photos here, these ideas will help:
Both times offer beautiful light, especially near the architecture.
It is quieter and less crowded, which helps with candid photos.
Movement creates natural moments. Comfortable clothing helps. We explore several areas of the park, so shoes you can walk in help a lot.
Balboa Park changes depending on the time of day. A photographer who knows the light can guide you to the best spots.

Alli and Harrison’s session was calm, sweet, and full of honest moments. Their photos show how natural their connection feels. Sessions like this remind me why I love documenting stories in such iconic San Diego locations.
If you want a session that feels candid and real, I would love to photograph your story.
