Planning your San Diego Courthouse Wedding: How I guide couples on their elopement day

How to plan your San Diego Courthouse Elopement: Everything you need to know.

This couple traveled to San Diego to elope, and since they were not from here, I guided them through their planning and timeline. They wanted photos that felt light, cinematic, and nostalgic. Their elopement fell on a Friday, which is usually a busy day near the courthouse due to military traffic. Because of this, I suggested booking the earliest appointment to keep everything calm and stress-free.

Helping Them Feel Comfortable in Front of the Camera

Before the ceremony, the couple told me they often feel awkward in photos — especially during candid or documentary-style moments. I hear this a lot, and I never want anyone to feel stiff or unsure. To help them relax, I kept the prompts simple, gave them space to breathe, and let them settle into the moment. Slowly, they forgot about the camera. Their movements became natural, their smiles softer, and the candid moments became effortless. These ended up being some of my favorite images of the day.

A Meaningful Ceremony at the San Diego Courthouse

The San Diego courthouse is such a sweet and simple place for small weddings. The soft coastal light and clean backgrounds make it easy to capture honest moments. I photographed their vows in a true-to-color documentary style with some soft, film-inspired tones. Their ceremony was full of quiet smiles, gentle nerves, and the sweetest little in-between moments.

Timeline Guidance: Why Early Courthouse Appointments Matter

Since they were not familiar with the area, I helped them choose the best time for their ceremony. Early courthouse appointments on Fridays help you avoid traffic, find easier parking, and enjoy a calmer atmosphere. It also gives us more time afterward for portraits and lets the day unfold without stress.

Cinematic Elopement Portraits at Balboa Park

After the ceremony, we drove to Balboa Park for portraits. This is one of my favorite locations because there is so much variety within a short walk — beautiful architecture, gardens, arches, and soft light everywhere. Their goal was to have photos that felt easygoing and cinematic, and Balboa Park gave us the perfect backdrop. With each spot we visited, they grew more comfortable, and the photos reflected that ease.

My Approach: Documentary–Editorial Meets Timeless True-to-Color

My style blends natural documentary moments with gentle editorial direction. I want your images to feel relaxed and honest but still elevated and timeless. I keep colors true and soft, and I guide only when needed. When couples feel present and comfortable, everything looks and feels more genuine. That is always my goal.
